Kristy Karpenske, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and child therapist with a deep passion for supporting children and families. Originally from Colorado, she has spent the last 15 years in the Bay Area working across a range of settings, including as a preschool teacher, foster youth advocate, community mental health provider, and therapist for teens and transitional-age youth. In addition to her role at Little Otter, she also supervises and trains therapists working in community mental health.
Her clinical focus centers on helping children and families navigate challenges related to trauma, anxiety, and life stressors. Kristy brings enthusiasm, compassion, and a playful spirit to her work, meeting children where they are and empowering families to build resilience and stronger connections.
Her therapeutic approach draws on several key frameworks, including non-directive play therapy, narrative therapy, and relational work. She believes that healing begins in strong, supportive relationships and partners with families to strengthen those bonds. Kristy helps children and caregivers reframe the stories they hold about themselves—fostering self-understanding, separating from problems, and uncovering new possibilities for growth.
Above all, she views every child and family as capable of healing and transformation. Her goal is to create a safe, nurturing space where children can express themselves freely and where families feel seen, supported, and connected throughout their journey together.
Outside of her clinical work, Kristy enjoys spending time with her family, reading, practicing yoga, and being outdoors.
