Supporting a struggling teen can be emotionally overwhelming, but prioritizing your well-being helps you be there for them. Practicing self-care, setting healthy boundaries, and seeking support – whether from a therapist, support group, or trusted friend – can provide relief. Acknowledging your own emotions and modeling healthy coping can also positively impact your teen’s ability to manage stress.
Creating a supportive home environment starts with open communication and patience. Encourage your teen to express their feelings without pressure, celebrate progress (big or small), and reinforce coping strategies learned in therapy. Providing consistency, structure, and emotional validation helps build a sense of safety and stability during their healing journey.
While moodiness is common during adolescence, persistent emotional distress, withdrawal from activities, significant changes in behavior, or extreme irritability may indicate a deeper issue. If these signs interfere with daily life, relationships, or academic performance, you should seek professional support to help determine if intervention is needed.
Encourage your teen to develop a growth mindset by celebrating effort rather than just achievements. Providing opportunities for independence, reinforcing their strengths, and modeling positive self-talk can foster resilience as well. Helping them navigate challenges with confidence builds the skills needed to cope with setbacks in youth and adulthood.
Approach conversations with empathy, active listening, and curiosity rather than assumptions. Normalize discussions about emotions, reassure them that seeking help is a sign of strength, and avoid dismissive language. Let them lead the conversation at their own pace, creating a safe space for honest dialogue.
There’s no perfect way to prepare – every teen’s experience is unique. Encourage them to come with an open mind and remind them that therapy is a safe space for them to share their thoughts and feelings. They don’t need to have everything figured out – our clinicians will guide them every step of the way.
Resistance to therapy is common, especially if a teen feels unsure about the process. Approach the topic with patience and understanding, emphasizing that therapy is a tool to help, not a punishment. Encourage them to take it one session at a time and to share with their therapist that they are feeling uncertain. Their therapist will work with them to make sure that they are actively involved in care and working on goals that matter to them.
Watch for drastic changes in mood, sleep patterns, appetite, or social engagement. Increased withdrawal, expressions of hopelessness, suicidal statements or self-harming behaviors are also red flags. If you notice signs of distress intensifying, seek support right away. If your teen is at risk of harm to themself or others, get help immediately. The following resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: Call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, Text "HOME" to the Crisis Text Line at 741741, or call 911 or take your teen to the closest emergency room.
